The Alberta government, via Alberta Health and Wellness, has invested eighteen million dollars into programs that promote healthy eating and active living for children and youth. This evaluation, REAL Kids Alberta: Raising healthy Eating and Active Living Kids in Alberta aims to evaluate these Alberta Health and Wellness programs in order to learn whether or not they are effective in promoting the health of children and youth in Alberta. The results will guide decisions to continuing investments in the promotion of healthy eating and active living by the Government of Alberta. As healthy eating and active living is not only important for the prevention of overweight and chronic diseases but also positively affects self esteem, learning and social development, continuing investments in healthy eating and active living is also of value to schools and school districts.

This evaluation will help us answer questions such as:

  • How aware are parents and students of healthy eating and active living initiatives supported by Alberta Health and Wellness?
  • What do Alberta children know about the importance of healthy living?
  • What are the eating habits and lifestyles of Grade 5 children in Alberta?
  • What can we do to improve the health of children and youth in Alberta?
  • What can schools do to improve the health and learning of children in Alberta?
